Christian key workers have shared stories of how their faith has helped them in their work as part of a special online service by the Church of England to mark Vocations Sunday.

The live-streamed service was led by Dr Paula Gooder, Canon Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral. Her message focused on God’s call to love others, which takes ‘infinitely different’ forms for each of us during the current crisis.

“At times like this, when our world feels turned upside down, living out our callings can be really hard,” she said. “All we can do is listen again to the voice of the God who calls, reminding us that we are loved beyond measure, calling us by name and asking us to pour out this great love in any and every way we can.”

NHS paramedic Matt Sanderson was among the frontline workers featured in the dedicated service.

Speaking from the back of an ambulance, Sanderson described how his faith helps give him the strength to face the daily challenges covid-19 brings.

“These are challenging times and the world has become a very scary place, fighting an invisible enemy,” he said. “Yet throughout this pandemic I am reminded by that still small voice that I am not alone.

“In these uncertain times it is God carrying me, and it’s his footprints I can see leading me through this journey.”

Sanderson, who has served in the National Health Service for 18 years is due to be ordained as an Anglican Deacon later this year.

The Church of England broadcasts a national online service every Sunday at 9am.
